What does freeze authority mean?

Plain-language guide · updated 27 October 2026

Short answer

Freeze authority is the right to lock coins in someone else’s wallet. If the creator of a memecoin still has that right, they can lock your coins: you still see them, but you can no longer sell or send them. If the right is revoked, nobody can do that any more: that does not make a coin safe, but it rules out one known trap.

Paste the address and check it yourself

Veydor shows, in plain language, which known dangers a Solana coin has right now. Free, no account, and Veydor never asks you to connect your wallet.

Go to the check

A check is a snapshot: a coin can change within minutes. A new check shows the situation at that moment.

How this works as a trap

The creator lets people buy, which pushes the price up. Then they lock the coins of the buyers and sell their own. To the buyers the coin still seems worth something, but selling no longer works. Such a coin is also called a honeypot.

Traps that do the same

On Solana there is also a newer kind of coin with extra settings. A few of those can have the same effect: a selling fee that the creator can raise afterwards, extra code that blocks selling, or a right to take coins out of your wallet. Veydor also looks at those settings.

When it is normal

USDC and other regulated stablecoins do have a freeze authority, so that the issuer can for example block stolen money. With an anonymous memecoin there is no good reason for it.

Frequently asked questions

Can the creator lock my coins?

Only if they still have the freeze authority. You can check that yourself: paste the address of the coin in Veydor and look under ‘Can they lock your coins?’.

My coins are locked. What now?

Only whoever holds the freeze authority can release them. Anyone who promises in a private message to ‘unlock’ or recover them does not have that power and is almost always after your wallet or your money. Never share your seed phrase. More about what you can do now: why can’t I sell my memecoin?

Do Pump.fun coins have freeze authority?

No, coins that start on Pump.fun do not have it. That does not make them safe: most go to nothing in another way. See is Pump.fun safe?

What is the difference with mint authority?

With freeze authority the creator puts coins on hold; with mint authority they create new ones. With a memecoin you want both to be revoked.
